District 34 Caucus Endorses 4 Candidates for School Board Election

The Glenview District 34 Caucus has endorsed four candidates for four seats on the Board of Education in the April 2023 election: Alex Kamilewicz, Julie Moon, Scott Nelson, and Vasilios Soupos. The comprehensive caucus process is open to any resident expressing interest. This year, the 58-member Caucus considered six candidates. The applicants submitted detailed written responses to an application questionnaire, participated in a thorough 45-minute in-depth interview, and presented during the final Caucus night. The Caucus greatly appreciates the continued offer to serve from many well-qualified citizens. These four candidates were endorsed.

“The Caucus is excited to endorse four individuals who bring valuable skill sets and experience to the Board,” Caucus President Brandy Isaac said. “For over 70 years, the Caucus has worked to endorse excellent candidates that produce our historically highly-functional school board. After extensive deliberations, the Caucus believes this group of candidates demonstrates the right mix of experience, strategic brainpower, and judgement, most critically to skillfully shepherd us through the important upcoming strategic planning process.”

Kamilewicz, running for his first term, has a long career in project and integration management across multiple industries, and seeks to bring his breadth of knowledge and solution-focused outlook to the board of education. He obtained a B.A in History and Political Science from St. Olaf College in Minnesota and an Mater of Letters in Medieval History from Oxford University in England. He is a current member of the Citizens Finance Advisory Committee and is on the Board of the Glenview Education Foundation. In addition, he was part of the Yes D34 Referendum Committee and the Citizen’s Task Force. Kamilewicz first moved to Glenview with his wife and children in 2004.

Julie Moon is running for her first term. She has worked primarily in marketing and communications, most recently at CBRE. She earned bachelor’s degrees in communications and sociology from the University of Iowa. Moon has served on the board of the Glenview Education Foundation for the past seven years, acting as Chair for the past three years. She has lived in Glenview for 12 years with her husband and son.

Nelson, currently President of the Board, has extensive involvement with the district and community. He is former Chair of the Glenview Education Foundation and continues to serve on the Advisory Board. He is also a youth mentor for Youth Services of Glenview/Northbrook and served on the district’s Superintendent Interview Committee in 2016. A commodity trader, he earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

Seeking his first term, Soupos is the Director of Product Compliance Engineering for Instant Brands, where he leads the global regulatory compliance and quality assurance teams. He holds a bachelor’s and master’s degrees in chemical engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology as well as an executive Master of Business Administration from Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management. Soupos, born in Greece and moved to the United States upon completion of high school, now resides in Glenview with his wife and two children.

The D34 Caucus is made up of residents from across the majority of the precincts in District 34, representing an array of people in varied professions. They share a goal to provide excellent public education, even in the face of challenging resources and diverse student needs.
